RAIKO’S MASK

After vaulting across a series of rooftops and steering clear of the taller towers, Hiro finally dropped down into the streets near Bryant Park. He let go of Hachi, and the dog immediately started sniffing around, tail flicking as he took in their new surroundings.

Bianca drifted beside Hiro, watching Hachi’s ears twitch. “Little guy’s freaking out a bit.”

Hachi whined as he sniffed around, the dog finally stopping before a puddle of dried blood.

“He’ll be fine,” Hiro told her as he dug into his backpack and pulled out {Raiko’s Mask}. “Or at least he will be until we test this.”

“Ooo, sounds like danger, and you know me.”

“I do.”

“I like danger.”

“I know,” Hiro told her as the important part of the Doom System’s snarky description flashed across his mind’s eye: Because you weren’t smart enough to secure a horse at an upstate equestrian facility when this all started, the dog you insisted on bringing with you from the First Interim will have to wear it. But you know how demonic dogs are: definitely not friendly and definitely not trying to dress up for a social media post. Still, if you do manage to get your dog to wear this mask, your fearless pooch will shift into a monstrous, horse-sized beast, gaining immense strength and agility.

“This should be interesting…” Hiro crouched near Hachi, holding the mask up. The Shiba Inu tilted his head, then immediately took a step back.

“He’s not gonna make this easy,” Bianca said.

Hiro flipped the mask over in his hands. A dark aura pulsed from its edges, a faint ripple of ink-black energy curling like mist. Something about it was unsettling—not just magic, but something older.

Hachi barked with a mixture of fear and curiosity.

“Maybe I could help,” Bianca suggested.

“Wrangle him? Sure.”

“No, bro. We’re not cowboys. We’re not wrangling anything, but I could sort of…”

“Wrangle him,” Hiro said flatly.

“Yes, but gently. I don’t like that term. Convince him. Watch.” The shield hopped off Hiro’s arm and landed near Hachi, who had mostly grown used to her presence. “I’m going to hold him. You rush in and gently put the mask on. Gently. He’ll probably bite me, but if he starts snapping, I’ll hold his mouth shut with my tentacles.”

“You sure about this?”

Rather than reply, Bianca reached a tentacle toward the dog. Hachi turned and, surprising them both, licked the front of her shield. “Awww, now he decides to be cute.” She sighed. “He’s totally gonna hate me now. Well? What are you waiting for? Let’s get this over with.”

Hiro edged around the demonic Shiba Inu until he was within reach. He could already tell the mask had some kind of auto-bind property, meaning it would attach itself as long as it made contact.

I just need to time this right…

“Ready?” he asked, barely moving his lips.

“I already told you I was,” Bianca replied.

Hiro moved fast, pressing the mask over Hachi’s face before the dog could react. As soon as it touched him, the mask sealed itself with a surge of shadowy force.
